Anita Bernunzo

"I was born in Sicily in 1971. At 32, I discovered yoga and met my master Daniel Odier, so that those inner doors which had remained closed for a long time could be opened. I underwent a deep disruption with no return. At 35, I left my country, family, everything, and started over. Self-taught, one day I took up a brush to try to express what could not be told otherwise. My paintings tell about my findings, my sorrows, my experiences of inner opening, and my attempts at liberation, reconciling with my inner self through art. An offer to life."

In her paintings, Anita Bernunzo translates the spontaneous revelation of forms arising with no rational control or desire to express a specific topic. It is a process coming from her inner impulse to transform an internal form into an external appearance. For her, painting is the expression of what cannot be expressed with words. It is the output of a sensation translated into an image. The image takes form as she paints the canvas, revealing to the artist the path of the painting as she works on it. "It's the painting that tells me how to do it. It's the color that tells me," said the artist. Anita Bernunzo started painting when she was moved by her practice. It all began fifteen years ago, when she started practicing with her spiritual Master, Daniel Odier. She experienced an intense inner process where she was led to leave all of her life's foundation behind and take her own path. At that moment, painting brought to her the expressive media to turn her deep experience into forms. "For me, painting is the testimony of the practice," she explained. At first, Bernunzo's paintings were figurative. Later a deep changement came. "I couldn't make paintings with forms, as I didn't have a form anymore, so they became abstract. I myself was also abstract."

The artist talks about cycles in her work: the cycle of cosmos, of landscapes, and of cells. She seems to abide in the source of creation where the pulsating energy has not yet come to a form. It is through her that the pulse of the creative force spills onto the canvas, the expression of a universe touching the heart of appearances from the foundation of all.
